My Second Operation

On 7th January 2013 I started to get a headache and over that week it got worse. At that point we didn’t know that the headache could be related to the shunt and how serious it could be. On the Friday of that week I still had the headache and it was becoming unbearable. That night my mum and dad were worried and were considering calling an ambulance but I fell asleep before they could do anything. Despite the headache I slept all night but I still had the headache when I woke up.

My mum phoned the ward on Saturday morning and told them what was happening and they told her to get me to A& E at the Children’s Hospital as soon as possible. When we got seen they decided to take blood and do some tests. I was in a lot of pain and was very upset. Eventually the the doctors came back and told us that my shunt had over-drained the ventricles and I was going to need emergency surgery and fast. They got all the paperwork done very quickly. Just before I went down to theatre I was sick. The pain was getting worse and I was crying. I had an emergency craniotomy to remove a blood clot that had been caused by the shunt over draining.

After a few hours hours I came out. I had to go to The High Dependancy Unit to be looked after. One nurse looks after you all the time. I couldn’t really move and couldn’t eat or drink. It was terrible. I stayed in The High Dependancy Unit for a couple of days and then I was sent back up to ward 7A. I had a new wound. A scar that went across the top of my head. It was very painful. Thankfully they had given me anti-sickness medicine this time so I didn’t have the extra drama of being sick again.

Once I got back to the ward it was just a case of resting and trying to get back on my feet. Thank goodness for paper, pencils and arts and crafts. If I didn’t have any of that it would be very boring in hospital!

After a few more days I was discharged to do the rest of my recovery at home. I was so happy to be saying goodbye to the hospital again but unfortunately that’s not the end of the story yet…

  3. So interesting to read about all these things from your perspective Sarah. Don’t think any of us can fully understand everything you have experienced but your blog certainly helps us. It might seem a silly question but has anything good come from it all? Have you seen the best side in side in people? Is it influencing your direction in life – what job you’d like etc? keep blogging x

When this all was happening I was too young and stupid to know what was actually going on but now I understand, I like to understand what actually happened.
